A Sense of Readiness, Risk & Responsibility ...

Adventure

Seakayaking

The words 'adventure' and 'recreation' can mean different things to different people. Most will agree that an Everest ascent would be an adventure, but what about a kayak trip from El Capitan to Refugio? An adventure could be anything that stretches you beyond your comfort level, and which has a less-than-certain outcome. It makes sense that adventures are also age-appropriate ... a creek swing and cold plunge is an adventure for a five-year old, but not for a 16-year old.

It's important to note that adventurous activity not only gets kids out and active, but sets the stage for valuable formative experiences. Adventure can be the furnace that helps forge connections. If you want to dig a bit deeper into the subject, read more in the Recreation & Geoeducation link at right ...

The three Rs apply to all adventures. One has to be ready or prepare adequately, consider and plan for risk, and establish responsibility. Please keep these in mind while partaking in all activities proposed on this site.

To help you along we have provided an introductory overview to each of hiking, biking and kayaking, as well as fitness, all linked from this page. Further research is necessary, and participation might require your group to take a sea kayaking class or more before they're ready to embark on an excursion.

What would this page be without a disclaimer: While we have made every effort to highlight possible risks and provide an introductory overview to each of the adventure activities in this program, we do not assume nor imply that this will adequately prepare everyone for the outings. Please gauge your own readiness, and having read through the sections, decide how well placed your group is to participate. Please keep in mind that you can always plan to do the more adventurous pursuits such as an island or overnight kayak trip with a local outfitter. We have tried to provide an overview to get you going along with links to professionals in the field.
